Que jouer à Cachan ? Je pense que cette question hante de nombreux esprits sur LF …

L'affluence attendue est assez énorme, 200 à 300 personnes, les ténors seront là,  les joueurs d’un niveau plus modeste aussi. Il ne semble pas fou de penser qu’on aura droit à un taux de pet deck plus bas que sur les tournois boutiques auxquels j’assiste (de manière assez passive, i.e. je m’y amuse peu et joue de manière assez désabusée) avec un arrière-goût bien fade du GP Amsterdam en bouche, c’était bien bon ces 2000 geeks rassemblés finalement... On peut donc réfléchir de manière constructive à ce que pourrait être le metagame à Cachan.

Depuis le ban de mental misstep et l’arrivée de delver of secrets, on assiste au grand retour de Tempo Tresh(TT) qu’on pourrait presque appeler Delver UGR tant cette carte est devenue en une fraction de seconde la pierre angulaire du deck. Lors des conclusions de tests, la phrase « Bref, j’ai fait T3 Jace » a vite été remplacée par « Bref, j’ai fait T1 Delver ». Est-ce LE choix?

Le GP Amsterdam, comme la plupart des grands tournois a permis aux meilleurs joueurs de combo de la planète MTG de tirer leur épingle du jeu et de remettre sur le devant de la scène les decks storm, tout le monde a noté la perf d’Elie (3ème avec Ant UBrg) et a adopté la quasi-totalité de sa liste, sont passés un peu « under the radar » les top 32 d'un Ant UBw et d'un DDFT UBw également qui étaient pilotés par deux allemands connus au moins dans leur pays, l'ajout du W permettant d'augmenter de manière conséquente les MU stifle/snare mais aussi les mirror de storm.

Un constat que je ne m'explique pas est ressorti du GP : Reanimator, malgré son omniprésence, n'a placé personne en top 16, deck trop attendu ? Stratégie trop faible ? Deck beaucoup moins autopilote que prévu ? Mon impression est que c’est un des decks les plus fort intrinsèquement qu'on ait jamais vu sur une table de tournoi à Magic l’Assemblée, qu’il a donc été le choix logique de beaucoup de joueurs MAIS qu’il demande un très gros travail de fond pour sider efficacement, certains match-up pouvant être très problématique post-sb, sachant que la mana base du deck ne permet pas une grosse marge de manœuvre, et que les gens étaient mal préparés et attendus à la fois, ce qui n’est pas combo Sans compter sur la forte présence d’Aggro GW (Maverick) qui entre son scavenging ooze et son  karakas MD peut punir toutes sorties un peu trop lentes.

Maverick punishing  fire, parlons-en, c’est un deck sur lequel j’ai beaucoup craché que ce soit IRL ou sur LF, mais il faut lui reconnaître quelques atouts très sérieux : Il est là pour détruire aggro-contrôle et stoneforge.dec, et répond bien à un metagame TT, Bant, Stoneblade UW, Aggro GW grâce à l’ajout de punishing fire qui fait un travail monstrueux dans ces matchs-up. Et il est surreprésenté. C’est clairement un acteur à ne pas oublier.

Et le deck qui gagne Amsterdam dans tout ça ? Bant est clairement un deck sur lequel il faut compter, car il a une très grosse force outre sa puissance (tout le monde a déjà scoop t3 après le classique t1 noble hierarch, t2 vendilion clique, t3 jace, the mindsculptor ) : il peut se vanter d’avoir 0 mauvais match-up modulo Storm selon les choix du deckbuilder. Aucun autre deck ne peut prétendre avoir un 65/35 vs Bant, le problème étant que le match-up vs Ant n’est pas fou, celui vs TT non plus, celui vs Maverick non plus, celui vs Stoneblade UW non plus. Le match-up vs Reanimator est quant à lui bon ( Yes on en tient un ! ).  Pour moi c’est typiquement le deck couteau suisse qui peut tout battre mais qui n’a pas de MU gagné d’avance. Sa polyvalence via les choix de listes possibles fait la vraie force du deck, tropical island + noble hierarch, mon adversaire joue-t'il Green Sun Zenith? Stoneforge? Natural Order? Daze? Stifle? Spell Snare? Snapcaster Mage? La seule chose dont on peut être sur c'est qu'il joue deux des cinq meilleures bêtes de l’univers legacy… (3 pour les listes qui jouent Stoneforge Mystic), que ça a gagné le GP Amsterdam et a permis à Alex Bertoncini en plus de ses brainstorm Ancestral recall de gagner l’Invitational SCG avec un joli 6-1 sur la partie Legacy... Plutôt pas mal. C’est, je pense, un des meilleurs choix quel que soit le méta (modulo un méta blindé de grim lavamancer.dec) pour un pilote expérimenté.

Une représentation du metagame en général ne permet pas de choisir son deck, du moins pas en l’état… Cependant, si j’ouvrais les paris je dirais que :

1) Reanimator sera représenté, pas forcément bien piloté mais pour les même raisons qu’au GP, il devrait y en avoir pas mal, il a un MU positif vs Ant et Maverick, un MU légèrement positif vs TT de par l’incapacité de TT à gérer une bête réanimée, quelle qu’elle soit, un MU équilibré vs tout le reste. Les soucis restant bien identifiés, « Karakas chatte » trouvé en g1 que ce soit par Bant, Stoneblade et/ou Maverick, Mulligan to oblivion, Turbo Rien l’exposent à une défaite sur mauvaise anticipation de la hate adverse, qui peut être bien disparate et qui peut à elle seule te faire sortir d’un tournoi. Un petit 7% me semble honnête.

2) Ant sera peu représenté car en France on a une certaine aversion pour combo MAIS il y aura surement plusieurs gros pilotes avec le deck, donc à ne pas oublier si l’objectif est de finir à la première place, de plus il est très bien positionné dans le metagame. Il est pour moi clairement LE « deck to beat », un MU légèrement positif vs TT, positif vs Bant, un MU très positif vs Punishing Maverick, un MU très positif vs les outsiders du legacy modulo les stax like, le seul souci restant Reanimator qui même piloté de manière sous optimale est un calvaire pour le deck. L’ajout de hate grave pourrait permettre de renverser cette tendance et d’avoir une journée relativement tranquille pour un bon pilote… et puis piloter le deck le plus fort, ca ne peut être qu’une bonne idée pas vraie ? Quid de jouer UBw pour augmenter le mirror match et TT ? Un très léger 5% mais on devrait en avoir minimum 1 en top 8.

3) Tempo Tresh / Tempo Zoo / Tempo UGR, que ce soit à base de nimble mongoose, de kird ape, de snapcaster mage ou de grim lavamancer , ça il y en aura, j’y mettrais ma main à couper. Le deck est très puissant, est une valeur sure du Legacy depuis des années, est très plaisant à jouer et on en voit 10 par tournois de 30 joueurs sur Paris, il devrait représenter un bon 15% de la salle.

4) Punishing Mav et Maverick, c’est le deck préféré des français, un petit 15% de la salle pour lui aussi. Comme dit tout à l’heure, il est là pour croquer TT, Bant et consœurs, il a pour défaut une incapacité à battre combo, mais « Who cares ? », personne ne joue combo… Attention cependant au MU vs grim lavamancer.dec, punishing fire ne fait pas tout malheureusement.

5) Bant, est selon moi, très dur à piloter (3615 mylife : j’essaye en vain de faire une game en limitant le nombre de missplay à 2 et ca relève du très très difficile), et est bien moins représenté que TT et Maverick sur les différents tournois français, je ne parierais pas sur plus de 5% de présence.

6) Stoneblade UW, c’est le deck qui sur le papier me fait rêver, une mana base en béton armé, associé à snapcaster mage, pierre angulaire du deck, qui a apporté un souffle nouveau au pack, pouvoir rejouer la panel de contre et d’anti-bête selon le besoin est une arme incroyable. Je ne sais pas si ceux qui ont testé le jeu ont le même sentiment que moi mais c’est fou comme passé le tour 5 je voudrais que tous mes top deck soient des snapcaster mage, elle fait gagner dans des situations improbables. Le défaut du pack néanmoins est d’avoir un early game dramatique alors que le metagame ne s’y prête pas, clairement TT peut l’envoyer très facilement dans l’espace en mettant de précieux point au début et en finissant à la nimble mongoose, ingérable pour le pack. De plus, le MU vs Ant n’est pas aisé non plus. C’est un deck très apprécié par les joueurs, je pense qu’on peut tabler sur un bon 8%.

Les matheux auront déjà le chiffre en tête mais avec mes estimations à l’œil on arrive à un bon 55% de présence. C’est ce qui fait la beauté du Legacy d’après un grand nombre, le format est très diversifié malgré une liste de DTB bien admise par la plus grosse partie de la communauté, des pistes sur « le pourquoi du comment » pourrait faire le thème d’une future chronique… mais pour l’instant ce qui m’intéresse c’est de me demander ce que vont bien pouvoir jouer les autres ?

Le pari des joueurs de Maverick est assez osé, devoir esquiver des combos toutes la journée, mais beaucoup d’autres outsiders font des paris osés :

1) Elves (à l’instar de Maverick), qui a gagné les 2 derniers gros tournois parisiens, avec une liste consolidée pour battre les decks tempos (beaucoup de scavenging ooze, du carpet of flower en veux-tu en voilà, et surtout X dizaines de basic forest), semble être un choix très honnête pour sa faculté à tout battre sauf combo, il a l’avantage de battre Punishing Maverick, MAIS a 0 porte de sortie vs Ant là où Maverick peut tenter de se débattre avec 15 cartes anti-combo en sb, et a un MU vs stoneblade UW moins bon que Maverick, en effet, Les 7 spots removal + snapcaster mage couplés à la combo batterskull + sword of feast and famine peut donner du fil à retordre aux « hommes » en collants.

2) Ichorid, avec ses LED, il reste un choix plutôt honnête, il a besoin d’esquiver tous les Reanimator de la salle, mais le petit ralentissement des deck storm depuis Past in Flame, lui permet d’avoir presque rééquilibré ce match up outrageusement problématique par le passé. Il a un MU dépendant du nombre de hate dans les sb adverses, un très bon MU vs Stoneblade, un bon MU vs Punishing Maverick et des MU équilibrés vs Tempo UGR et Bant. Que reste-t-il ? Random, qui est synonyme de cake walk pour peu que les sb ne soient pas blindés avec 6 anti-grave.

3) All-In Zoo, c’est un deck que je ne connais pas particulièrement mais on en voit toujours quelques-uns trainer,  ça a l’avantage de pourrir Tempo UGR et Maverick, qui représenteront la plus grosse part du metagame que j’ai prédit, mais ça me semble être un choix plutôt faible à cause de ses difficultés vs combo et vs Stoneblade.

4) Junk, c'est un deck qu'on voit souvent sur les tables de Legacy, ça me semble être un choix mauvais, le match-up n'est pas bon vs Stoneblade, Tempo UGR, Ant, Ichorid, bref, pas grand-chose à dire ici, cela sera représenté mais ça me semble trop faiblichon pour être pris en compte même si il faudra faire attention à une early Liliana ingérable.

5) UGB, sous toutes ses formes ce deck a quasiment disparu des tables, je pense que c’est dû à la surreprésentation des Tempo UGR qui sont compliqués, et au fait que le deck n’a pas beaucoup de match-up favorables dans le metagame actuel.

6) Mono B Pox, deck qu'on a pas encore vue sur les tables françaises mais qui est en sur-représentation online, que ce soit sous mtgo, cockatrice ou mws, pas sur qu'il y en ait beaucoup, mais bien piloté le deck roule clairement sur beaucoup des DTB, en étant cependant blank face à combo, je pense qu'il faut au moins avoir testé quelques fois vs le deck pour pas se faire sortir bêtement à Cachan en contrant la mauvaise menace

7) Nic fit aka veteran explorer.dec, deck très à la mode, car il reprend un thème adoré des français : ne pas jouer combo et surtout ne pas jouer bleu . Je trouve le deck sans saveur, voir carrément insipide, mais il fait des trucs pas dégueux via l'abus de veteran explorer pour caster des bombes à des mana cost outrageux tout en restant daze/spell pierce proof ! Il joue cependant ma carte préférée, cabal therapy et en abuse à souhait. En gros il est là pour détruire tout deck basé sur le tempo et l'attrition, même s'il plie plutôt bien sous delver t1 et contre sur veteran explorer, encore que ce soit beaucoup plus facile à dire qu'à faire

Après les outsiders viennent les grands oubliés qui ont peut-être une carte intéressante à jouer :

1) Hive Mind, je n’en vois quasi jamais en France, c’est un des très rares decks à avoir top 8 les 2 GP Legacy de cette année pour des représentations relativement faible, sur deux tournois de cette envergure, je ne crois pas à la simple chance, mais je connais peu le pack et sa place dans le metagame.

2) CBTop, counterbalance et sensei’s divining top se sont placés, malgré un taux d’apparition ridicule, en top 8 du GP Amsterdam, la même liste a remporté la CDF Legacy il y a un mois de ça, le deck est fort, très fort, il a un bon MU vs combo (captain obvious ?) tout en se défendant très bien vs à peu près tout le reste, un contrôle ayant des sorties auto-win régulières ? Que demande le peuple ? On en a vue 2 s’exprimer au dernier Magic Bazaar, un a échoué au pied du top 8, l’autre l’a atteint. Cela semble être un bon choix et donc un deck sur lequel il faudra compter.

3) DragonStompy, deck de sortie par excellence, pour lequel j’ai une aversion non camouflée,  mais qui roule sur storm et aggro-contrôle. Le problème du deck restant son instabilité, si vous vous sentez de faire trinisphere et/ou blood moon t1 all day long, go for it !

4) BridgeWalkers, un MU en béton armé vs Ant et TT, le nombre de Jace présent sur les tables diminuant en flèche face à l’avènement de TT, le choix semble plus qu’honnête ! Attention à ne pas voir trop de Reanimator ou de 1/1.dec


En résumé, selon moi, il faut clairement jouer Storm à Cachan, avec un sb préparant Reanimator en affaiblissant le moins possible le MU TempoUGR,  ou alors jouer TT avec des nimble mongoose pour croquer du stoneblade et du mirror match !

Moi dans tout ça ?
Arf, j’ai testé 5 des 6 DTB, tout sauf Maverick quoi (on ne se refait pas), je pense en piloter 2 correctement, TT et Stoneblade UW, je voudrais avoir le temps d’apprendre à maîtriser Storm et/ou Bant, mais je ne l’ai clairement pas
Avec 40 bilands en jeu, je me connais, je n’oserais pas jouer TT et finirais par piloter mon 1337Dredge et tenterais d'esquiver Reanimator toute la journée... car je ne pourrais pas regretter de perdre sur mes propres missplays (on ne se refait ... définitivement pas).

Et puis quitte à perdre, autant que ce soit sur Mulligan to Oblivion non?
