On a tous demandé un jour à notre adversaire, le regard mouillé d’excuses, de bien vouloir nous laisser revenir en arrière… par-ce qu’on a joué un peu vite, parce que c’est un tournoi boutique « à la cool », ou parce que notre erreur est bien trop énervante pour être assumée.

Face à ce genre de question, il y généralement deux attitudes :

- Celle du bon Samaritain, qui prétend être là pour l’amour du jeu, et par conséquent, autorise l’adversaire à revenir en arrière ;
- Celle du méchant requin, intransigeant, qui ne vous laissera jamais revenir en arrière, même à 4h du mat’ en Cube ;


Pour ma part, je me place généralement dans la seconde catégorie (méchant requin), et si je fais cela, c’est justement pour l’amour du jeu et par respect pour l'adversaire. Laissez-moi vous expliquer.

Que ce soit en session de test, en tournoi boutique à la cool, ou en top 8 de GP, je pars du principe qu’on est aussi là pour s’entrainer. De mon point de vue, quel que soit le tournoi, je vais donc essayer de faire le même effort de concentration, en essayant de ne jamais tombé dans le « easy-playing » qui consiste à moins me concentrer (= moins me fatiguer) dans les parties avec peu d’enjeu (exple: ne plus compter ses pv, ne pas réfléchir plusieurs tours en avance, lancer des phases d’attaque sans prendre en compte préalablement toutes les possibilités de bloques, etc.). Pourquoi s’infliger tant de concentration dans une session de test sans enjeux ou un tournoi boutiques 6 joueurs ? Parce que notre cerveau est traitre, et les mauvaises habitudes qu’on lui fait prendre (easy-playing), nous empêche de développer des réflexes de jeux et de concentration qui seront bien utiles lors de parties à enjeux. Cette maxime bien connue des sportifs résume assez bien le propos : « ce n’est pas l’entrainement qui rend parfait, c’est l’entrainement parfait qui rend parfait ».

Évidemment, parfois on est juste là pour s’amuser sans se prendre la tête me direz-vous. Mais si vous avez l’once d’une démarche compétitive, dites-vous bien que le easy-playing n’est pas neutre, et équivaux à l’inverse de l’entrainement, soit donc, à quelque chose qui vous donne de très mauvaises habitudes et vous fera régresser à la longue. Et puis après tout, Magic est un jeu de réflexion, si vous n'êtes pas disposer à faire l'effort de réfléchir, évitez d'y jouer. En tout cas, d’un point de vue personnel, mes plus belles et intéressantes parties, sont celles ou mon adversaire et moi étions en pleine concentration, dans un jeu de poker-menteur et d’anticipation, à se renvoyer les beaux play en grindant et en capitalisant la moindre micro erreur de l’autre. Et ce genre de partie ont pour la majorité eu lieu dans des parties sans enjeux… c’est pour moi cela, le beau jeu et le plaisir à Magic, et je crois que pour la grande majorité des joueurs, le plaisir à Magic vient d’un beau combat gagné dans une partie âpre contre un adversaire concentré qui ne lâche rien.

A l’aune de cette réflexion, est-ce qu’autoriser un adversaire à systématiquement réparer ses miss-play (=miss-concentration) c’est l’aider ? Je ne crois pas. Vous l’encourager justement à se dire qu’il peut se passer d'une pleine concentration, étant donné qu’il pourra toujours compter sur votre tolérance. Vous lui donnez l'habitude de penser "à moitié" et faire en premier l'action (pour en voir les résultats), au lieu de d'abord visualiser mentalement l'action, pour en percevoir ses implications et conséquences sur le jeux... Et un jour, en GP, il enchaine les miss-play sans comprendre pourquoi. Il faut bien comprendre qu’on ne peut pas dire « là je joue à la cool, et puis en GP je me concentrerai bien plus ». La concentration, c’est d’abord une habitude et quelque chose qui se travail à chaque partie, et pour lequel il faut prendre le pli. Est-ce que les sprinters s’entrainent en marchant, en se disant, au Jeux Olympiques je ferai l’effort de courir à fond ? Magic est un jeu d'abstraction où les bons joueurs passent plus de temps à imaginer leurs actions et celles de leur adversaire et a en mesurer les conséquences et implications, plutôt qu'à jouer des cartes "dans le présent".

Alors la prochaine fois qu’un adversaire vous semble être un horrible shark qui vous refuse un retour en arrière illégale, pensez à tout ça, et dites-vous qu’il n’est peut-être pas si malveillant, mais simplement qu’il est là pour le beau jeu et la progression…
